Claude Wathey: the politician who dominated Sint Maarten for four decades

A history profile of Claude Wathey, who led the Democratic Party and dominated Dutch Sint Maarten's politics for about forty years until the early 1990s.

Albert Claudius "Claude" Wathey led the Democratic Party and was the dominant figure in Dutch Sint Maarten's island politics for about forty years. He is widely credited with turning the island into a tourism economy, and his name lives on at the Philipsburg cruise port. He died in January 1998, aged 71.

Early life

Wathey was born on Sint Maarten on 24 July 1926. Port St. Maarten still marks the date: every 24 July it lays a wreath at his statue, and in 2020 The Daily Herald reported the wreath-laying for what would have been his 94th birthday.

Island and Antillean politics

Wathey led the Democratic Party for about four decades, and the party itself recalled his role when it marked its 70th anniversary. He sat in the Island Council of Sint Maarten and twice served as a gedeputeerde, a member of the island's executive council. For decades he also sat in the Staten, the parliament of the Netherlands Antilles, as NRC noted in its obituary.

He played a leading part in forming Antillean governments. A Nationaal Archief photo from 4 September 1984 records him arriving at Schiphol airport as the Antillean cabinet formateur.

Opening the island up

Under his leadership, Dutch Sint Maarten opened its doors to investors and grew into a major tourism destination. De Volkskrant credited him with waking the island from a sleepy existence, and the inscription on his harbour statue credits him with the island's turn to tourism. In a 2026 SMN News report, a veteran journalist credited Wathey's long-term vision with speeding up the island's transformation into one of the Caribbean's leading destinations.

Leaving politics

Wathey left active politics after the Netherlands placed the island government under higher supervision in the early 1990s.

Legacy

The cruise and cargo port in Philipsburg carries his name as the Dr. A.C. Wathey Cruise and Cargo Facilities, and its pier is known as the A.C. Wathey Pier. A statue of Wathey, dedicated by St. Maarten Harbour Holding, stands in front of the cruise terminal. His life is the subject of a biography, Claude: A Portrait of Power, by Fabian Badejo.
