The Festival Village on Pond Island was renamed the Jocelyn Arndell Festival Village at a ceremony on Tuesday 3 May 2022, the last night of that year's Carnival, The Daily Herald reported.
VROMI Minister Egbert Doran unveiled the new sign at the village entrance. According to the Herald, he said the late Arndell had been instrumental in starting St. Maarten Carnival in 1970, after seeing Carnival in St. Thomas, and had served as a civil servant.
St. Maarten Government Buildings Foundation (SOG) president Kurt Ruan noted that the village was 15 years old that week, and said that, although it had been badly damaged in 2017, it would be "up and running" by 2023, the paper reported. SCDF president Alston Lourens and Education, Culture, Youth and Sport Minister Rodolphe Samuel also spoke, and a member of Arndell's family thanked the organisers.
