A short profile of Louis Constant Fleming, appointed mayor of Saint-Martin, whose town hall was in Marigot, in 1926 and again in 1941, and father of former senator Louis-Constant Fleming.
By SXM Daily ·
Louis Constant Fleming was mayor of Saint-Martin in the decades when the French side of the island was a commune of Guadeloupe, run from the town hall in Marigot. In that period, as the Collectivité's history shows, Saint-Martin's mayors were appointed by the governor of Guadeloupe.
Appointed by the governor
According to the history published by the Collectivité de Saint-Martin, Fleming was appointed mayor on 16 August 1926 by the governor of Guadeloupe, Louis Gerbinis. He followed Jean Baptiste Ferdinand Morales, whom the same governor had appointed in May 1925.
The Collectivité's history records that Fleming was appointed mayor again on 28 February 1941, this time by Governor Constant Sorin. The next appointment it lists is that of Hugues Elie Fleming, named mayor by the prefect of Guadeloupe in January 1950.
Death
Louis Constant Fleming died in 1949.

His son, also named Louis-Constant Fleming, was elected the first president of the Collectivité de Saint-Martin in 2007 and later served as senator for Saint-Martin. Read his profile: Louis-Constant Fleming: Collectivité president (2007–2008) and senator for Saint-Martin.
