Reported 7 July 2022.
The causeway bridge across Simpson Bay Lagoon became stuck after opening for marine traffic on a Monday afternoon in early July 2022, the VI Free Press reported.
What went wrong
According to the outlet, the Simpson Bay Lagoon Authority (SLAC) said the bridge had a technical problem: when it tried to return the bridge to its normal position for road traffic, the mechanism no longer worked. An official quoted by the outlet said a power outage might have been the cause. Cars and trucks had to take a detour.
An earlier fault
The VI Free Press said the problem was the reverse of one about four weeks earlier, when the bridge would not open and boats could not pass. Technicians had come to the island in early June to replace faulty sensors in the hydraulic system, the outlet reported.
