Reported 24 September 2024.

The Collectivité de Saint-Martin officially inaugurated the first 11 classrooms and the administration block of the future Collège 600 at Quartier d'Orléans on Tuesday 24 September 2024. The opening marked the end of phase one of the new 600-place school, which is being built on the site of the existing Collège Roche Gravée de Moho while classes continue.

Pupils had already moved into the new classrooms at the start of the school year, Faxinfo and Le Pélican reported. Both outlets put enrolment at 416 pupils for the 2024 school year. The Collectivité marked the inauguration in a post on its official page.

What was built

According to Faxinfo, the classrooms were designed with sustainable development and access for children with disabilities in mind. The U-shaped building surrounds a new, planted recreation area, and staff gained a new staff room. Construction crews were still finishing details and working on the school's other buildings at the time.

Collectivité president Louis Mussington, the delegated prefect Vincent Berton and vice-rector Harry Christophe attended the ceremony. Le Pélican described the mood as joyful.

Why it mattered

Officials at the ceremony described the new building as giving continuity to children's schooling in an area whose needs are growing, Faxinfo reported. The first phase let pupils use new classrooms while the rest of the campus was built around them. For another French-side school project, see the Collège 900 at La Savane.
