A delegation from NV GEBE, Sint Maarten's electricity and water utility, travelled to Finland in March 2025 for direct negotiations with Wärtsilä, the main manufacturer of GEBE's power generation units, according to a GEBE release.
The visit
According to GEBE, the delegation arrived in Vaasa on Tuesday 4 March 2025, where it toured Wärtsilä's production facilities and held leadership discussions. On 5 March, the team took part in detailed project talks on upcoming engine upgrades and long-term service plans. Discussions continued at Wärtsilä's headquarters in Helsinki, where implementation plans were explored. The delegation was scheduled to leave Helsinki on Friday 7 March, the release said.
The delegation included interim manager Troy Washington, power plant manager Anthony Hodge, and the heads of mechanical and electrical maintenance, according to the photo caption in the release.
Why go direct
GEBE said that dealing directly with the original equipment manufacturer removed intermediaries and allowed the company to negotiate the best outcomes for the utility and the people of Sint Maarten. Decisions on equipment and service agreements would focus on cost efficiency and long-term reliability, the company said.
