Victims of violence on the French side once again have a dedicated social worker at the gendarmerie, after an agreement signed on Friday, October 2, restored funding for the post for three years, according to Le Pélican and Faxinfo.
The post of intervenante sociale en gendarmerie (ISG, gendarmerie social worker) had been vacant since November 2025 for lack of funding, the two outlets reported.
The agreement
According to Faxinfo, the convention was signed by Prefect Cyrille Le Vély, France Victimes 978 director Olivier Canale-Fatou and gendarmerie commander Colonel Hugues Loyez. Faxinfo reported that it funds the post until 2029; Le Pélican describes it as a three-year agreement.
The annual budget is about EUR 50,000, now almost entirely paid by the State: EUR 45,000, with the association covering the rest, according to Le Pélican. Previously, two-thirds came from the Collectivité and one-third from the State, the outlet reported.
What the role involves
Marie-Noëlle Jardon, who has held the role since 2023, returned on September 14, according to Le Pélican. She works from the Maison de protection des familles at the gendarmerie in Concordia and covers the Hope Estate, La Savane and Marigot brigades. She also visits Saint-Barthélemy once or twice a month, the outlet reported.
Gendarmes pass on reports of violence cases to her. She contacts the victims, assesses their needs and refers them to partners such as France Victimes 978, the Maison des Femmes, lawyers and psychologists.
Why it matters
Intrafamily violence made up about 35% of recorded violence in Saint-Martin in the first half of 2026, according to Préfecture figures as reported by Le Pélican.
SXM Daily could not obtain a Préfecture release on the signing.
