Reported 8 September 2023
Hurricane Lee, a Category 5 storm, was forecast to pass north of the northern Leeward Islands, including St. Martin, in September 2023. Two local outlets reported its distance from different National Hurricane Center (NHC) advisories.
September 7 advisory
The Daily Herald, citing NHC advisory no. 9 issued at 11:00 AM AST on Thursday, September 7, 2023, reported that Lee was about 870 miles (1,405 km) east of the northern Leeward Islands. On the forecast track, the core of the hurricane was expected to move north of the northern Leewards over the following days.
September 8 bulletin
Faxinfo translated the NHC bulletin of 5:00 am on Friday, September 8, 2023. According to that bulletin, Lee had an eye about 18 km wide and a central pressure of about 926 mb, and tropical-storm-force winds extended about 180 km from the centre.
In an editor's note, Faxinfo added that Lee would pass about 400 km from St. Maarten. That figure was a forecast, not a measured closest approach.
