What the fund is
The Legacy to Future Funds, officially the subsidy scheme for Social Initiatives Transatlantic Slavery Past for the Caribbean part of the Kingdom (SUMS-C), supports work on awareness, processing, recognition and commemoration of the slavery past. It follows the Dutch State's 2022 apology for its role in slavery. The Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (BZK) commissioned the scheme, and Uitvoering van Beleid (UVB), part of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment, runs it. The total budget is EUR 29,333,333, and each of the six Caribbean islands receives an equal share.
Category 1: USD 10,000 for professionalisation
Category 1 pays a flat USD 10,000 (about XCG 17,900) per approved application, for up to one year. It covers training and courses that help an organisation handle its administration, setting up or improving its administrative organisation, and building or improving its website to promote work in line with the scheme's aims.
The second Category 1 period runs from November 2, 2026 at 4:00 AM AST (9:00 AM Dutch time) to January 12, 2027 at 12:00 noon AST (5:00 PM Dutch time). Applications can only be submitted during that window, and UVB notes that the periods can change.
Who can apply
Only not-for-profit legal entities established in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom can apply, and the activities must take place there. Individuals cannot apply. For Category 1, the organisation must already be working towards the scheme's aims, shown in its articles of association or demonstrated in another plausible way.
How to apply
UVB, which runs the scheme, sets out how to apply on its scheme page, along with the conditions, the categories and the application periods.
