Reported 3 May 2024.
The members of Sint Maarten's new Council of Ministers, led by Prime Minister Dr. Luc Mercelina, were appointed and sworn in by Governor Ajamu G. Baly at Harbour View in Philipsburg on 3 May 2024, according to a press release from the Governor's Cabinet.
The Governor's speech
In his speech, the Governor explained that under Sint Maarten's constitutional norms a majority in Parliament nominates the ministers, and that candidate ministers are screened to check that their conduct is beyond reproach. He said the screening was there to protect the public and build trust in those taking office.
What followed
The government was formed after the January 2024 election. It lost its majority in Parliament on 20 May 2024, which led to snap elections on 19 August 2024, the Governor's Cabinet said later that year.
