New St. Maarten General Hospital reached its highest point of construction in March 2026
In March 2026 the new St. Maarten General Hospital at Cay Hill reached its highest point of construction, with SMMC marking the milestone at a ceremony on 26 March 2026.

The new St. Maarten General Hospital (SMGH) in Cay Hill reached its highest point of construction in March 2026. The Daily Herald reported on 15 March 2026 that St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC), which is building the hospital to replace its current facility, had announced the milestone the previous week.

The ceremony
SMMC marked the "topping out" at a ceremony on Thursday 26 March 2026, according to a release on the SMGH website. The release said the first section of the roof had been completed. Guests included Prime Minister Dr. Luc Mercelina, Health Minister Richinel Brug, Justice Minister Nathalie Tackling, the CEO of general contractor FINSO and the St. Maarten Trust Fund's programme manager. SMMC CEO and Medical Director Dr. Felix Holiday described the hospital as a collective effort to provide high-quality care close to home.
What the hospital will have
A June 2026 World Bank feature said SMGH is being built to withstand Category 5 hurricanes, with 108 seismic base isolators to absorb earthquake shocks and independent power and water systems for use in a crisis.
After a visit by Parliament's health committee on 13 August 2026, SMN News reported that the hospital is planned to have 104 inpatient beds, four operating theatres, expanded dialysis, diagnostics including MRI and a helicopter platform.
When it opens
The same SMN News report said the planning shown to Parliament put completion of the main building at 30 June 2027, with the move into the new hospital expected in July and August 2027. It added that further delays were already expected and could push the move back by some months, possibly to December 2027. SXM Daily has not seen an updated timetable since then.
