It was the race's second edition, organised by the SXM Tri Académie club, and 110 athletes took part across several formats, according to Le Pélican. The longest, the "M" format, combined a 1,500-metre swim, a 40 km bike ride and a 10 km run.

Nearly double the field

Club president and organiser Erwan Gentil said the field was almost twice as big as the year before, and that the club hoped to grow the event further, the outlet reported. Athletes came from Guadeloupe, Martinique, Antigua and St. Barths. Competitors from Saba could not make the trip because heavy swells stopped their boat.

Gentil described Kasten, a half and full Ironman specialist and the previous year's world champion in his category, as one of the favourites, according to Le Pélican.
