The Rotary Club Saint-Martin Nord held its annual Foire aux Livres (book fair) on Saturday 14 September 2024 from 8 AM to noon on the Place du Marché in Marigot. According to the club, the fair offered a wide selection of second-hand books at low prices, all of them donated, to encourage reading among young people and adults while raising money for a local cause.

The club timed the fair for September, the month Rotary International devotes to literacy and basic education. Music and a friendly atmosphere were promised for the morning, Faxinfo reported.

A reading of Anansi stories

From 10:30 to 11:30 AM, local author Joselyne Arnell read extracts in French and English from her new project, a collection of tales of Anansi the spider, a central figure in Caribbean storytelling. Faxinfo said the book was expected to be published at the end of 2024.

Where the money went before

According to the club, funds raised at the 2023 fair paid for a bed for parents and carers staying with children in the paediatric department of the Louis Constant Fleming hospital. Faxinfo noted that the club was founded on 10 June 1988.
