Both of the island's national football teams play Concacaf Nations League matches this Tuesday, about an hour apart. Sint Maarten face St. Vincent and the Grenadines again after losing to them 4-2 on Saturday, and French-side Saint Martin play the Bahamas. At home, the U15 Paradise Showdown youth basketball tournament runs until Wednesday at the L.B. Scott Sports Auditorium.
Sint Maarten lose 4-2 to SVG
On Saturday, October 3, Sint Maarten lost 4-2 to St. Vincent and the Grenadines in League B, Group D. The match was played at FFB Stadium in Belmopan, Belize, with Sint Maarten as the designated home team.
SVG went ahead early. Oalex Anderson scored in the 11th and 24th minutes, and an own goal by Sint Maarten's Sergio Hughes made it 3-0 in the 34th minute. Anderson completed his hat-trick in the 57th minute. Sint Maarten hit back late with goals from Mitchell De Nooijer (74') and Quinton Christina (82'), but couldn't close the gap.
Second meeting today in Belmopan
The two teams play again today, Tuesday, October 6, at the same stadium. This time St. Vincent and the Grenadines are the designated home team. Kickoff is 5:00 PM St. Maarten time (3:00 PM in Belize), according to Concacaf.
In League B, each team plays every group opponent twice across the September-October and November windows, at centralized venues. That's why the same two teams meet again three days later.
Saint Martin take on the Bahamas
Saint Martin, the French-side team, is separate from Dutch-side Sint Maarten. They play the Bahamas in League C, Group C today at 4:00 PM St. Maarten time (also 4:00 PM local in St. Croix). The match is at Bethlehem Soccer Stadium in Christiansted, St. Croix.
Saint Martin go into the match after a 5-0 win over the US Virgin Islands on October 1. Concacaf reported that the win put them top of Group C.
The times are from Concacaf and could change, so check the Concacaf match pages before kickoff.
U15 Paradise Showdown at L.B. Scott
Closer to home, the 3rd annual U15 Paradise Showdown continues at the L.B. Scott Sports Auditorium until Wednesday, October 7. The youth basketball tournament started on October 3. It is organised by the Performance Sports Academy (PSA) Athletics Association, and eight teams from around the region are taking part: Sint Maarten, Saint Martin, Saba/Aruba, Anguilla, St. Kitts and Nevis, Guyana, Tortola and Statia.
Admission is US$2 for under-18s and US$4 for adults. SXM Daily has not seen published game times for the remaining days, so check with the organisers before going.
What's next
Both football matches are played this afternoon, and SXM Daily will report the results. After this window, Sint Maarten's League B campaign continues in the November window.
