Tropical Storm Fiona passed south of Sint Maarten on Saturday 17 September 2022. At 11 am it was about 105 miles south of the island, according to a government update based on Meteorological Department figures. An earlier forecast had put the closest pass at about 110 miles to the south-west.

Businesses reopen

The country was still under a Tropical Storm Warning at midday. The government said essential businesses, such as supermarkets, bakeries, hardware stores, restaurants, pharmacies and gas stations, could open at their own discretion from 2 pm. The airport recorded gusts of 47 miles per hour.

Minimal damage

Fiona later became a hurricane and caused severe flooding in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Touring the island the next day, Prime Minister Silveria Jacobs said the warnings had been discontinued and damage on Sint Maarten was minimal, The Daily Herald reported. She urged small-craft operators and swimmers to take care while seas stayed rough.
