Reported 24 September 2024.
Repairs to 19 Sint Maarten schools damaged by Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017 were finished, the National Recovery Program Bureau (NRPB) announced in September 2024. The work was paid for by the Sint Maarten Trust Fund with financing from the Dutch government.
What was done
According to the NRPB, the schools received structural reinforcement, roof repairs, electrical work and hurricane shutters. The work started in 2021, after a technical assessment in 2020, and was coordinated with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth and Sport. The 19 subsidized schools were repaired in three batches to limit disruption to classes.
The bureau said its brief covered hurricane damage only, so full renovations were outside the scope. Where it was possible, it also fixed problems found during the work, including installing new electrical panels in some schools with ageing wiring.
Along the way
By January 2023, six schools had been completed, including Milton Peters College, the Methodist Agogic Centre and St. Dominic High School, the NRPB reported at the time.
An official at the education ministry said a few schools outside the programme were still to be repaired by the government.
