The University of St. Martin (USM) held its 29th commencement ceremony on Saturday 17 June 2023, sending 22 graduates into the next stage of their lives, according to the university.
The ceremony took place at the Belair Community Center, USM said in its account of the day published on 19 June.
The university also marked a milestone among its own staff. According to USM, two members of its faculty, Dr. Yadira Boston and Dr. Delroy Pierre, were recognised as the first USM faculty members to have earned doctorates.
USM is Sint Maarten's local university and offers degree and other programmes for students who want to study on the island rather than overseas. Its annual commencement is one of the main events on the island's education calendar, bringing together graduates, families, staff and community leaders.
The 2023 ceremony was the 29th in the university's history. Each year's class adds to the number of residents with locally earned qualifications, which USM presents as part of its role in building skills on the island.
