Reported 19 August 2024.
The Government of Sint Maarten, the National Recovery Program Bureau (NRPB) and the World Bank signed a US$10 million agreement for a wastewater management project, the World Bank announced on 19 August 2024.
Funding
According to the World Bank, the government was to finance a further US$15 million through a co-financing loan from the Government of the Netherlands.
Why it matters
The World Bank said many households rely on individual systems that can overflow or release untreated wastewater into nearby waters. Better collection and treatment were expected to reduce public health risks and protect surface water and beaches, which the bank linked to the tourism economy.
Prime Minister Dr. Luc Mercelina and the Minister of VROMI were among those pictured at the signing, according to the release.
