The day traces back to a gathering in Paris in 1987 led by Father Joseph Wresinski, founder of ATD Fourth World, and has been recognised by the United Nations since 1992, Le97150 noted. This year's theme, "Habiter la terre", focuses on access to decent housing, a healthy environment and the many forms of insecurity.

Locally, Le97150 said, the fight against poverty relies largely on associations and on organisations such as the Red Cross and Le Manteau. Le Manteau runs a CHRS, a shelter and social reintegration centre, as well as services for people who are homeless, excluded or affected by domestic violence. According to the outlet, it offers emergency housing and social support, and helps women who are victims of violence and their children with safe accommodation and follow-up.

Practical information: Le Manteau de Saint-Martin is on route du Fort-Louis, in the former hospital buildings in Marigot. It is open Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. For donations, call 05 90 29 26 80, according to Le97150.
